2003 Yes, it's just Ed, but mixing up the bylines may
create some interest. Let's have some posts from other Winskills, with more
details about your family and branches! I post now because I finished Patrick
Bishop's "Fighter Boys". It's a very moving account of the Battle of Britain and
related events. As he points out, at the time he wrote the book last year
(published this August), there were 230 survivors of the B of B, down 70 from
only the previous year. Because Archie Winskill was in the Battle, and is quoted
several times in the book, there is a big connection with the clan, but of
course the subject is much larger. The book is of great value; one of a number
that in recent years has remembered the WWII generation, which is fast receding
from memory into history. It remains as true now under the light of history as
it did in 1940 that these 2,900 pilots saved England from invasion and thus from
ghastly outcomes for civilization. It was an honor for me to meet and talk with
Archie; like all veterans of the Battle modest about his role, and his
subsequent episodes in the war. Remember, I sought out Archie because of my
interest in the family and name, and he repaid my interest with great
graciousness and warmth. I would like to see members of the clan write to him,
especially this holiday season. I believe that he would welcome this very much;
his interest in the family and name is a great as that of any of us. So that's
my proposal; if you have an interest, email me and I can provide you with an
address. And one day we'll have that clan gathering in the Eden Valley, at the
foot of the Pennines!

2003 Last night at the local library I picked up a
newly-released book by British author Patrick Bishop, "Fighter Boys". It's about
the Battle of Britain, particularly from the pilots' point of view. It's been
issued in Canada, the UK, and down under, as well as in the States. I've started
it, and it's quite well-written and interesting. I post this because Archie
Winskill is quoted several times in different places in the book. The quotes
appear to be from his Imperial War Museum interview. One of my favorites: Archie
and his comrades would sometimes conclude a day of dogfighting with the Germans
by going into London for drinks and Turkish baths in Jermyn Street, then grab a
couple hours sleep, and back into the cockpit... I recommend the book highly.

21:43:11 Saturday October 25 2003 Hi everybody I too have
little to add to my WINSKILL connection. I visited my grand uncle George's grave
at the Euston Road cemetery in Belgium last year (grandson of George and Ann
MONKHOUSE). He was killed in 1918 at the Somme. A very sombre place. I have
compiled a time line of George's life in the war if anybody is interested.

2003 From time to time, I do a websearch on Winskill
topics, including now and then an "archie winskill" search; this usually turns
up instances of aviation prints available for purchase which Sir Archie has
autographed. When I visited him last year, Archie told me that there is quite a
market for signatures of surviving Battle of Britain pilots on photos and
paintings (indeed, I have in my office a great Spitfire battle print by Graehme
Lothian signed by Sir Archie and others, which I bought online at a pretty good
price). He donates his payments for these autographs to various charities.
Anyway, recent searches on his name have turned up a large host of articles
reflecting a recent quote he made in the press commenting on a forthcoming Tom
Cruise film about American participation in the Battle of Britain. Take a look;
you'll find the quote. I was happy to see his name in the current press. Hope
they'll seek him out for further trenchant observations!

2003 In doing some further research on the etymology of the
Yorkshire Winskill place names (actually, place name is probably more accurate;
Lower Winskill and Upper (High) Winskill are adjacent to one another, and
Winskill Stones is the recently-given name to the limestone group found at High
Winskill), several sources give the origin as "windy shieling", a shieling being
a temporary hut or shelter. The sources give the origin as Old Norse. This is of
course completely consistent with what we know of the origin of the Cumbrian
village's name; a shieling being a shelter, or shield. The interesting question
is that of whether Winskill farms in Yorkshire are an independent use of the
name Winskill, as opposed to a location which took its name from a person named
Winskill. The Yorkshire sources don't address this issue, appearing simply to
assume that the name arises from a shieling at this decidedly windy and in olden
times very remote site. This is entirely possible, and it would be interesting
to find out more; something I'm trying to do. Winskill as the family name,
however, decidedly comes from the Cumbrian village; Winskill being an ancient
village near a considerable town, Penrith. Winskill in the Yorkshire Dales, on
the other hand, would never have what amounted to a population.

2003 Here is some High Winskill/Winskill Farm information
that I just found in a little article about farming in and around Langcliffe in
the Yorkshire Dales. This is the first background I've seen, and it shows that
the area carried the Winskill name at least as early as the 16th century:
Winskill Farms. In 1591 Nicholas Darcy and Henry Billingsley sold 7 messuages
and land at Winskill and Cowside in the tenure of the Foster family (five of
them), Christopher Lawson, Henry Paycocke and Michael Saylebanke. The farms
consisted of High, Middle and Low Winskill. At the turn of the 20th C, High
Winskill was farmed by Umph Hannam. At some point a cow caught anthrax and was
eaten by the then farmer and his wife who both died and the farm was abandoned.
Lower Winskill Farm. In the middle of the 19th C was farmed by the Twisleton
family (of poetry fame). They were succeeded by Jim Lowther and the Sharpe
family. When they failed it was bought along with the others by Ernest Forster
of Stainforth and leased to his brother, N. Forster Senior (of Manor Farm).
later a Middleton farmed here and on his leaving the land was leased off and the
house used as a holiday cottage until the farm was taken in hand again by Ernest
Forster’s grandson Thomas Lord. Middle Winskill Farm. Little is known at present
of this farm.

2003 I'm posting a note here in case Peter may check the
guestbook; I don't have a current email address for him and I know he is often
on the high seas. I was contacted by David Turnbull, a cousin of Nick Winskill
and thus of Peter, who hasn't heard from Nick's family in Zimbabwe for quite
some time, and hasn't been able to contact them. My Zimbabwe Winskill
information of course has come through Peter, plus the bit about Nick's arrest
by the Mugabe regime that I found on the web and posted last Fall. So if you see
this, Peter, drop me a line and I'll put you in touch with David. While I'm at
it, I'll add that I recently had further contact with Mr Dyson in Yorkshire, who
will be visiting some friends of Tom Lord's at the end of August and will try to
get me some contact info. Tom Lord owns Lower Winskill Farm, as did his
forbears, and I hope to get and post some history of Lower Winskill and High
Winskill.

2003 Good to see your post, Phillip. Let us know something
about your branch. I have two sons, and I have three brothers with sons, so the
Tacoma branch will survive, I think! The village of Winskill which you see in
Glyn's pic is quite small, a hamlet really; too small for a pub. But it's a
lovely farming area at the foot of the Pennines just a few miles east of
Penrith. It's worth a visit sometime. The interesting thing is that we have had
few posters here from the UK (apart from Glyn, of course), and several from
overseas Winskills. So it would be good to hear some family details about your
branch. Welcome!

2003 Phillip, good to see your post. If you haven't
already, scroll down the posts here for the last couple of years and you'll have
a lot of the family history. The name remains very rare, and all branches seem
to come ultimately from the North; from Cumbria and Yorkshire. Indeed,
everything traces back to Cumbria. These factors taken together establishes
remote cousinship amongst us all, though precise relationships are difficult to
trace. My uncle Bob Winskill and late cousin Ailene Winskill were able to put
together a family tree going back nearly 200 years for our branch, but it is
very difficult to trace the specific relationships between the branches. I would
suggest, indeed strongly encourage, that you post here as much as you know and
can find out about your branch's history and background, and we'll see what can
be put together.

short note to keep the name at the top after the spam posters; Glyn clears 'em
out once in awhile. Recently looked at some old family material with tales of
early Vancouver BC. My great-great grandmother quoted on bear hunting in areas
which are now in the heart of urban Vancouver. Christopher Winskill, her
husband, and the other local men organised regular bear hunts to keep their
stock alive; so many changes in not much more than 100 years. I reckon both
Peter's and Linda's Winskill branches would have some interesting pioneer
tales.

meeting with Archie and Christiane Winskill in Henley. While I love to post

Ed
Winskill in Tacoma WA USA at 18:54:44 Thursday December 12
2002 Time perhaps for another post, at least for the
archive. I thought a description of the Winskill Stones area might be of
interest to the clan, now or in the future when this lately dusty repository is
unearthed! Winskill Stones is the name of an area of natural limestone "paving"
stones, located in the Yorkshire Dales, a few miles from Settle, which is a
market town on the western edge of the dales. The Dales themselves comprise a
large national park, on which of course farming and other agricultural
activities continue to take place as ever. One interesting feature of the Dales
are these limestone paving formations, which appear very much like large natural
paving blocks, sometimes of large groups. They are formed by the weathering of
glaciated limestone, and are quite distinctive. They have been "mined" for
building and fence stone for a long time, but are now subject to protection, as
is the Winskill group. These take their names from Upper Winskill farm, upon
which they lie. Upper Winskill is also known as High Winskill, and is on an
ancient drovers trail which still exists as a public pathway. Both Upper and the
adjacent Lower Winskill farms are working farms. I do not yet know the origin of
their names.

2002 Here is some recent Zimbabwe news involving Nick
Winskill, Peter's brother; Nick was released after this episode because of his
health; I don't know the present status: On Friday evening, a group of police
from Darwendale and including CIO visited Mike Barry and asked him if he
wouldn't mind going down to the station to show his papers and apologised for
any inconvenience caused. He said that he would do that with pleasure but when
he arrived there, he was immediately locked up without any explanation. The
group then continued on their rounds and went to Jody Cowley, Jim Brown and Nick
Winskill - who did not open his gate as by now it was very late. Jody Cowley was
aked to visit the police station 8am the next morning and Jim Brown was taken to
the police station and also locked up that night. Jim and Mike were put into
seperate cells at Darwendale police station. They were not allowed any warm
clothing, shoes and socks or blankets or food. Our 'over-over' radio went on
until 11pm that night, reporting the whereabouts of the dreaded vehicle. 6am the
police were back at Nick Winskill's and told him to get into the vehicle - no
questions asked and not interested in any documentation or discussion. Nick, not
having been all that well recently refused to get into the vehicle and drove
himself there in his own car.

2002 As promised, a further note about my visit with Sir
Archie Winskill last July. I will add more later. My wife Debbie and I met Sir
Archie at the Phlyllis Court Club in Henley. The club is on the river, in the
stretch where the regatta is held, and is one of the centers of activity during
the regatta. The club itself has an ancient provenance as a manor, and has been
a club for a century or so. Sir Archie is 85, very vigourous; of a witty and
open manner. We spent 6 hours with him, some of the time with his wife
Chrisitane. She is very elegant at 90, and like Archie a kind and candid person
indeed. Archie Winskill is a Penrith native; his father owned a group of
automobile garages in the North, and in fact opened one in Alberta in the 1920s;
the family lived there for a time. In the 30s, he fell under the spell of
travelling aviators in Cumbria (what were called barnstormers in the States),
and developed a love of flying; this interest kept him in the RAF after the war;
a lifelong love of aviation. He trained with the RAF reserve after '37, and was
called up at the outbreak of war. After the war, he remained in the service, and
in the 1960s was Air Attache in Belgium and then in Paris. He speaks French;
Christiane is French, and he has always been closely connected to France. He and
his wife had a house at Lille in the south of France for many years. While
serving as RAF public affairs spokesman in 1968, he received a call from the
service chief upon the death in a helicopter accident of the then-Captain of the
Queen's Flight; basically the "airline" within the RAF responsible for flying
the Royal Family about the country and the world. Though he was close in line
for promotion to Air Vice Marshall (equivalent to a two-star general), he gladly
accepted this interesting post; what he calls "this glitzy job". He recounts
many things of interest about this service; he held the position until 1972,
much the longest service of any Captain of the KF or QF before or since. Two of
Sir Archie's grandchildren are the children of his erstwhile son-in-law, Sir
Christopher Meyer, presently and since 1997 the British ambassador to the United
States. A very interesting man and gracious gentleman; the clan can be proud
indeed of its most distinguished member. Thanks to Glyn and Peter for the things
that made this meeting possible. Archie Winskill, like the rest of us, is
passionate about the Winskill name and heritage.

2002 Well, Hello ED, I did happen to check in today - for
the first time in months. I was very interested to hear that you and your wife
had been over in England recently and visited the various Winskill places. It's
beautiful up there isn't it. Especially the lake country - Wordsworth's
birthplace, Windermere and so on. I've been away too - in the Mediterrean for
two months - Malta - which was very pleasant. Working on a book with Gerda. It's
great to swim in that warm water every day ! I was fascinated to hear about your
meeting with Sir Archie and his wife and glad to hear that it went so well and
I'm sure he felt the same way about it. Did you ask him about his time as head
of the Queen's Flight - ferrying the royals around - he did that for many years
I believe ? I look forward to hearing more about it. Yes, I had to cancel my
account with earthlink a couple of months back and apologise for not letting you
- and others - know. Actually for two months I was without internet which was
was a very good thing ! As for the Winskill family in Zimbabwe: My brother Nick

2002 Linda, many condolences for the loss of your dad; you
and I are of a generation, clearly, my dad having died at 79 a year and a half
ago. It's good to hear that yours enjoyed this guestbook and the Winskill lore
that we've all been able to generate. As the Book says, the age of man is three
score and ten, or even by reason of strength, fourscore. At fourscore, your dad
had many years, which is terrific. I too feel as if we're all one extended
family; the extreme rareness of the name and the common Cumbrian/northern origin
of all the branches makes us all cousins in my book! One of the many very
interesting things about Archie Winskill was that he too had as much enthusiasm
for the Winskill clan as any of us; I was only the second Winskill he had met
outside of his immediate family, as he was the first for me. This in itself was
a great thing for me, and as the years progress, we should seriously think about
the possibility of getting as many branches together for a clan gathering-- and
we mustn't put it off forever, as I resolved not to do in Archie's case. Of
course, it's a long jump from the antipodes to England, but we can do it! On
another subject, I hope Peter checks in; his email address isn't working. I'm
hoping for the best for his family in Zimbabwe, where the situation is very bad
now. Linda, please give us a few more posts on the Kiwis and Ozs if you can.

2002 Just time right now for a short note. My wife was
invited at the "last minute" to a conference in Oxford, so I tagged along. The
trip was a couple of weeks ago. We went a week early, and traveled to the North
of England, where we hadn't been before. We went to the village of Winskill,
outside of Penrith-- a little hamlet, really, with several houses and farms;
beautiful country. The we visited Winskill Stones in the Yorkshire dales, which
is on land surrounding High Winskill (Upper Winskill farm) and Lower Winskill
Farm. This is near Settle on the western edge of the Dales. So I believe we saw
all of the Winskill place names! We went to the Roebuck Inn (now the Cask House)
in Kendal, once operated by my ancestors: Thomas Winskill appears in their
records as landlord from 1904 to 1925, which confirms our family lore. The peak
of the journey was a visit with Sir Archie Winskill and his elegant wife
Christiane at the Phyllis Court Club in Henley-on-Thames. We spent several hours
with Sir Archie, a very warm and gracious man; the distinguished head of the
clan. I will report further at another time. All of this of course was made
possible by the lines of communication amongst the Winskills made possible by
Glyn's website.

2002 Jessica, I'm quite sure that there is no genuine coat
of arms for the Winskills; you will find that commercial geneological services
will offer to create one for a fee, and maybe some branch of the family has done
that before. Coats of arms over the centuries have been commissioned by
families, particularly in eras when some supposed social status was conferred by
them. Like Glyn, I've always thought this was too easy and perhaps a bit of a
sham. The Winskill name originates in probability from the village of the same
name in Cumbria, and has an ancient Norse origin from the Vikings. Like
countless other families, representatives with the name moved in the 18th and
19th centuries from the land, probably mostly tenant farming, to artisanship,
business, etc. in the wake of the industrial revolution. Likewise, in the 19th
century, many emigrated overseas, as did your branch and mine. My branch in
Kendal, Cumbria, were "purveyors of beer" and innkeepers in the mid-19th
century. Take a look at some of the older posts here in the guestbook if you
haven't already. I think the New Zealand Winskills were the first to emigrate
overseas. I think the real history is much more interesting than the usually
"made up" coats of arms; on the other hand, it might be fun to create one from
that real history. I encourage your research into the family. Please post the
things you learn here!

Saturday February 16 2002 Good question Jessica....I did
inquire some years ago with a company that make plaques with the coat of arms
for family names, but I was not impressed with the result. The company could not
find a coat of arms related to the name Winskill but made one up for me. Seems
too easy to me. Mabe Ed could help in this......I would assume that the best
person to ask would be Sir Archie Winskill and as Ed is in contact with Sir
Archie, mabe he could ask him if there is a family coat of arms.

2002 I am writing a short article about Peter Turner
Winskill, an English temperance reformer, born 27 April 1834 in
Newcastle-upon-Tyne, died 10 May 1912 in Liverpool (where he had lived since
1882). He and his wife Elizabeth (married 14 February 1857) had fourteen
children. Winskill wrote a number of histories and biographical directories of
the temperance movement. Also many temperance songs. He also published a brief
undated memoir, _A Key to the Mystery; or a Short Sketch of the Life and Labours
of Peter T. Winskill_. If anybody has information, about this Winskill I would
appreciate your sharing it with me.

2002 David Fahey - re. your reference to PT Winskill and
the Temperance Movement: years ago - in the mid 70's - I was doing some research
in the London Library, Mayfair, and came across some original material to do
with a Peter Winskill who was the leader and founder of the New England
Temperance movement based in Boston. That's about the limit of my memories - but
if you look in their data base - which in those days was pasted into big
reference volumes - you might find something about him. It intrigued me at the
time I guess because it was a name sake - and I was certainly not a teetotaller
! I'd be very interested to hear about your article and where it will be
published !

2002 David, I would be very interested in the product of
your researches. I've seen references to P.T. Winskill on the web with regard to
the temperance movement but no details. We would appreciate it if you would post
a short paragraph or two about him here on the Guestbook, and I would be much
interested in a copy of your article when completed.

Winskill in Tacoma at 17:49:45 Monday January 21 2002 I
received from Sir Archie Winskill a few days ago an excerpt from a 1987 book by
Brendan Murphy, "Turncoat", which describes his encounter with the British
traitor Harold (Paul) Cole in Marseilles in 1941. Cole was a double agent who
exposed some of the French resistance evasion networks to the Germans. Flight
Commander Winskill had made it to the south of France with Resistance help after
being shot down over Calais. Archie met Cole, and lost some money as a result,
but fortunately was not betrayed. He eventually escaped over the Pyrennies, and
was repatriated through Gibraltar. It was after this that Winskill received the
DFC. While Murphy's book is out of print, I note that many copies are available
through alibris.com. Flt. Cmr. Winskill was prohibited from flying over France
thereafter, because of his knowlege of Resistance escape routes and contacts;
standard procedure. He was shot down over Tunisia in 1943, ditched in the sea,
swam to shore, and again evaded capture. Sir Archie has his 85th birthday Jan.
24 of this year.

traced the Wisconsin branch and talked to them, and have had contact with the
Ontario branch. My family is the Tacoma, Wash. branch, and I believe the
Illinois and New Yorkers are the only other Winskill branches in North America
(this doesn't count Peter of LA, who is our representative from the
Zimbabweans). I have seen several web references to the Sullivan and Bethany

lived in the Arthur, IL area when growing up, then later moved to Sullivan, IL.
He was the son of John Dalton Winskill, who was the son of Joseph and Anna
Winskill. We believe Joseph and Anna came from England and settled in the
Kirksville, IL area. Gary had one brother, Raymond Earl, who is deceased. He has
4 children living in and around the Sullivan area. These are the only Winskill

2001 Hello Kevin. Very interesting bit of information. I
wasn't aware that "shelter from the wind" referred to pit stops for shepherds. I
guess in 10th century Northumberland a pit stop would have been a place to feed
and water the animals ? Hello Ed. How are things ? I've just been in Zimbabwe
for a month which is pretty depressing to say the least - ongoing chaos and
destruction of what was once a very productive and efficient country and
economy. The white farmers are now being told to leave en masse -though my own
family have been left alone for the most part and allowed to plant crops. But
what is the use of being one of a few productive farms in the middle of a
country in chaos ?

2001 I've had some further correspondence with Sir Archie.
He found and forwarded an interesting article about "High Winskill" in the
Yorkshire Dales national park area. I had seen some references to Upper Winskill
in this region and wonder if it is the same. It seems to be in the area of
Winskill Stones. Does anyone have more info about these features in the Dales?
The origin would be particularly interesting to know: are these named after a
Winskill family, or do they have ancient origin like that of the village; ie,
named by the Norse as "shelters from the wind"? That sounds possible, as I would
imagine that in that region such shelter might often be called for! It's been
awfully quiet on the Guestbook. Let's have some more posts by other

received another very kind letter from Sir Archie Winskill the other day. Among
other things, he says that he joined the RAF volunteer reserve in 1937, and was
called to active duty a few days before the war. He enclosed a very interesting
tape recording of an interview he gave in 1990 to staff of the Imperial War
Museum, which contains much information about his war career. It is fascinating
to hear his account in his own spoken words. At the time he left school in
Carlisle in 1933, it was Sir Archie's ambition to train for the Merchant Service
(Glyn will have an affinity here!), but this was sidetracked by the depression;
all the ships of the Northern Shipping Co. were laid up due to the economic
conditions. He worked as a clerk with the LNE Railway til the war, and stayed
with the RAF after hostilities were over. Perhaps in due course I can make
copies of the tape for those Winskills who, like me, have an interest in the
career of this most distiguished clansman.

interest when it happens, and I would urge all to check that site now and then.
Taking a point of personal privilege, on behalf of the BC/Tacoma Winskills I
report with sadness the death of our dad, Edward M. Winskill, on Feb. 21, 2001,
in Bogota, Colombia, where he was visiting. He was 79, still practicing his
profession as a dental surgeon for the love of it (as he had been for more than
55 years), and healthy and going full bore till the moment of his death. We can
only wish for as much! We will miss him greatly. He gave us a great love of
family and pride in the Winskill name, to which he added much luster in our
book. We sent him off with a great service and much skirling of pipes for, like

For the record: The WINSKILL STONES are an area of limestone near Settle in the
Yorkshire Dales which have been used as ornamental chunks and paving for gardens
for centuries. It's also a botanically rich wild life habitat and the Craven

Penrith and Carlisle grammar schools. This, of course, is the very heart of
Winskill country! Indeed, if I recall aright, Penrith is only about 7-10 miles
from the village of Winskill. So far, all the Winskills who have checked in here

expected. I expect there are those who visit the site but haven't posted. I

2000 While using a search engine I had not before employed,
I discovered a short but very informative article about Sir Archie Winskill
printed in a Bucks paper within the last couple of years. It describes Sir
Archie's reunion with the Frenchman who rescued him after he was shot down in
his Spitfire over Calais. Air Cdre Winskill, who spoke French, escaped to Spain
with Resistance aid. He was after repatriation awarded the DFC, commanded a
number of squadrons, and was later shot down again over the Tunisian coast. He
swam ashore and again escaped to safety. He is quoted as saying that he has
never met anyone else who was shot down twice and escaped twice. The article has
other interesting details, the first I have seen of the war career of this most

up the good work. Interesting post from Linda as I visited Christchurch NZ some
years ago whilst in the Merchant Navy. But my interest in the family name was
not as strong as it is now. I know the enteries in the 'What's in a name are
outdated but any updates greatfully recieved. I will be working on a new format
for the site soon to make it easier to gather information and have a site
registered with the Winskill name but it is early days yet. Keep the info coming
...I enjoy hearing from the world clan.

2000 Welcome Geoffrey Woollard ! Yes, I did say in a
previous post that my grandfather who went to South Africa in the late 1880's
was named Frederick Dobito Winskill. I've always wondered where that unusual
name originated and it seems that you are on to something so let's hear more !!
best wishes Peter Winskill. ps I am now going to do a Dobito search myself !!

2000 Dear Winskills, I found your site by searching for
DOBITO. My wife is descended from the DOBITOs of Kirtling, Cambridgeshire,
England, and Frederick DOBITO (1812 - 1887) was her first cousin five times
removed. It looks like Frederick Dobito Winskill was probably a relative, too.
Someone write if any of this rings bells. Geoffrey Woollard.

search of The Times today shows that Air Commodore Sir Archie Winskill
celebrated his 83rd birthday on Jan. 24, 2000. I am resolved that we should try
to learn more of this most distinguished Winskill. On a very somber note, Peter
Winskill today writes that the Winskill family in Zimbabwe is under siege, with
the Mugabe regime having marked them and 800 other farmers for land confiscation
without compensation. Our prayers would be welcome by Peter and his family.
Thanks Linda for the interesting information. George sounds like he may well
have been the first overseas Winskill pioneer.
Linda
Winskill in Christchurch, New Zealand at 4:29:12 Friday June 9
2000 OK Ed, here's the information on the NZ Winskills that
I promised. As I mentioned earlier, all the NZ connection are descendants of
George Winskill (b.1829)and Ann Monkhouse Winskill (b.1826). They arrived in
Lyttelton on the Zealandia in 1858 with 2 daughters, Mary Ann (she had eight
daughters and three sons) and Margaret (two daughters and three sons). Goerge's
father was also George (b.1799) and lived and worked as a blacksmith in Appleby
in Westmoreland. He and his wife, Esther Scott (1804-18340, had 3 other
children, Mary, John and David. George then married Ann and they had
Christopher, Esther, Isabella, another Christopher, Ann, William, James, George
and Mary. George and Ann Winskill had several more children in NZ: John and
Richard died in infancy, Hester (never married), George (who had four daughters
and four sons), Isabella (never married), David (my great grandfather) who had
one son, William (no descendants), Esther (ten daughters and two sons) and John
(one son and daughter). As can be seen such fecundity has helped populate the
antipodes although with so many daughters, the name Winskill is still
comparatively rare. There are sixth generation NZers among the descendants. The
original family settled in Amberley, a township north of Christchurch in
Canterbury province. George established the first blacksmith business there. For
many years North Canterbury was the area where most descendants resided. I am
aware of some Christchurch Winskills now living in Queensland, Australia. The
names in the "What's in a name" are a bit outdated. That's probably enough from
me. I would love to catch up with any Winskills who visit Chrischurch. We are a
hospitable lot down here! My email address is lindylou_48@yahoo.com
Ed

note that in the Court Times there is an October 1999 reference to Air Commodore

post more Kiwi information.

2000 Hi there, it is great to find this site.Have you
caught up with the New Zealand Winskills? All those in NZ are descended from
George Winskill who arrived here in 1858 with his wife and 2 daughters. He was
originally from Appleby, England and featured in the 1851 census living in
Penrith. With a lot of assistance from another of his NZ descendants I have been
adding to the family tree here in NZ. I would enjoy hearing from any other
Winskills interested in the NZ connection.

some e-mail correspondence with Robbi Winskill Eagleson of the Ontario Winskills
and Ellen Winskill Bernius of the Illinois. I hope to get some detailed info
from them sometime soon, and I urge them to post the information regarding their
branch on the guestbook. The Ontarios are related to David Winskill who posted
briefly awhile ago- David, lets hear from you. As yet, not a peep from the New
Yorkers. Thus from North America we have heard from (or about) the BC/Tacoma,
Wisconsin, Ontario, Illinois, and Rhodesia/Zimbabwe Winskills. Progress is being
made. The old world is lagging!

Peter
Winskill in LA at 23:58:41 Sunday December 19 99 Ed -
That's fascinating about your grandfather, I remember as a kid my dad talking
about coming down in the English Channel and being picked up by navy boats -
planes were used in reconnaissance in those early days and we forget what a
terrible senseless "war to end all wars" that one was, which killed millions of
Europe's youth. My father didn't talk about it much but it had obviously deeply
affected him. Sir Archie was the head pilot of the Queen's Flight in the 70's
and I guess he must be in his late 70's or early 80's now. It would be
interesting to hear about him and his exploits as a WWII fighter pilot which I
believe he was. Maybe David Winskill in London knows something about that ? I
want to take this opportunity to thank Glynn W. for giving us the opportunity to
use his web site and wish him and his family all the very best in the New Year
and Century and a Happy Christmas. The same good wishes to you Ed and your
family(ies) up there in Washington and to all the Winskills worldwide !

99 Peter's information is of considerable interest. My
grandfather, Edw. F. W. Winskill was also in the Royal Flying Corps in WW1. I
have a copy of his fitness certificate, and a telegram to his father announcing
that he had been gassed after going down behind German lines. He flew as an
artillery spotter, and lost power on one occassion and glided from 4,000 feet.
He managed to evade capture. Facinating that he was a fellow flyer with Peter's
dad; both "colonials". Now we need someone out there to post the Sir Archie
story. I see the references on the web, but little info. My grandfather
eventually settled in Tacoma, and operated an oil heating and engineering
business for 30-40 years. My dad is a dental surgeon here, still practicing at
77. I'm a lawyer, my brother Don is a lawyer, brother John a dentist, brother
Bob a boatbuilder, and brother Jim a software consultant and entrepreneur. Our
sister Elizabeth is a teacher. All of us in the Pacific Northwest.
Peter
Winskill in Los Angeles at 2:18:23 Saturday December 18
99 Here is some of the information concerning the
Rhodesia/Zimbabwe Winskills which seems to have been wiped ! My grandfather
Frederick Dobito Winskill left Sidcup, England in the early 1890's to find new
pastures in South Africa where he met two orphan sisters who had been left to
fend for themeselves on a sheepfarm in Western Australia and had found their way
to the gold mines of South Africa. My grandfather married one of them and she
died in childbirth; he later married the sister Sally Freeman who was my
grandmother. My father Frederick Noel was born Christmas day 1899 in London
England ; such were the social pressures of those days that a child born in the
colonies was considered socially handicapped and my grandmother had travelled by
train from Salisbury to Beira and then by steamer through Suez to London to have
him born in civilization and not in the bush ! My grandfather had come up in the
Pioneer Column from S. Africa with Cecil John Rhodes as an employee of the
British South Africa Company. My father was a flier in the Royal Flying Corps in
the First World War, at age 17 ! In 1923 he bought about 10,000 acres on a
government loan and started to farm tobacco, maize and cattle. He married my
mother Sibyl Turnbull on one of his visits to the Old Country in 1934. The
Turnbulls lived in Sidcup next door to the Winskills where my Dad was staying
with his grandmother Maria and four of his unmarried aunts and uncles who lived
in the same house. My grandfather had been the only one to get away ! Anyway, it
was love at first sight and out of that union came my brother Nick, my sister
Diana and myself. My brother runs the farm and has branched into roses and a
game farm which has giraffe, eland, zebra and much else. Unfortunately it is a
very unstable political situation and does not look to be getting better ! My
brother has two sons John, who is married and works on the farm and Simon who is
in banking based in London. I studied history and Eng Lit. and worked for many
years in publishing in the UK and South Africa. I came to the States in 1984
where I worked in a private mental health facility as one of my interests is
psychology. But my great passion has always been music and now I am a musician
(pianist - jazz, ballads, classical !) Such is a very short history of the
Zimbabwe Winskills.
Ed
Winskill in Tacoma at 19:35:30 Friday December 10 99 At
the risk of boring the readers, I'll add another post. I found Virgil Winskill's
name in a CD-ROM phone directory, and called him up. He now lives in Florida. I
then talked to his sister, Maryann Stoltz, who lives in California. They are
both in their 80's and have interesting tales of life in Wisconsin. Lore of
yore. And I stand corrected-- Chrissie died first and Winskill School is named
after her. As I have now found some ancestors from Kirkby Thore, I suspect
distant cousinship to the Wisconsin Winskills. Time will elucidate this, I hope.
Ed
Winskill in Tacoma at 0:30:49 Monday December 6 99 Now
a little bit more on our branch. My grandfather Edward F.W. Winskill was born in
Vancouver BC in 1895. His brother Christofer was a few years younger. As I said
in an earlier post, their grandfather William was married in Kendal to Abigail
and in Ontario to Mercy. He had 2 children in England. Whether Abigail died, was
divorced, or abandoned we don't know. However, when my grandfather visited
Kendal on leave in the UK in WWI (he was a pilot), he recieved a very cool
reception from the Winskill relations who owned the Roebuck Inn there. He always
had the distinct impression that they regarded him as a branch from the wrong
side of the blanket, perhaps because of the above circumstances. Or perhaps they
worried the colonials would come to claim an inheritance! Anyhow, any info as to
that Kendal branch would be of tremendous interest to us. While my grandad
married an American girl and came to the US in the '20's, my uncle Chris stayed
in BC. He was a successful potato farmer for decades, but in the 1970's the
Delta,BC municipality bought his farmland for a park. He and his wife Molly had
enough from this to travel the world, etc. and Winskill Park and Winskill
Aquatic Center got their names. They had 3 daughters, and their surviving child,
Carol Gilbert, lives in Victoria BC.

99 It's time to get to work to replace some of the posts
lost when the server went down. It would be good to see Peter Winskill's info
about the Rhodesia/Zimbabwe branch again and in more detail. Here goes on the
Wisconsin information. I got ahold of Joan Blackney of Wisconsin who gave me a
great deal of data on the Winskill sisters of Lancaster, Wis. Thomas Winskill,
of Kirhby Thore, Yorkshire, married Margaret Allen. They came to Lancaster in
1886. They had 4 children, Thos. W., Chrissie, Louisa, and Henrietta. The
sisters never married, and stayed in Lancaster. (The family also lived in Durham
before coming to the US.)The brother died in 1928. His son, W.L.(Ned) Winskill
died in 1980 in California, leaving 3 surviving children,Virgil, Wm.L.,and a
daughter whose name I don't have. They should leave a message here! At any rate,
Chrissie and Henrietta donated the land for Winskill School in memory of Louisa,
who died first. Thus the history of Winskill School is at last elucidated.
Hopefully, Virgil et.al. or their offspring will find this site and give us the
rest of the story.

descended from William Winskill(1840-1923) who married Mercy Goddard (1842-1916)

99 Winskill place-names are rare in North America; I know
of only two:Winskill Park and Aquatic Center in the Fraser River Delta of
British Columbia and Winskill Elementary School in Lancaster, Wisconsin. The
first is named after my great-uncle Christopher Winskill, who farmed in the
Delta for decades; this is a tale for another time. The lore on Winskill School
I got from Al Webber, the unofficial historian of Lancaster. He says the school
was named after the unmarried Winskill sisters, now deceased, who donated their
farm land to the school district. He does not recall their first names, but well
remembers looking out of the windows of his high school classroom in the 1930's
at the cows on their farm, daydreaming when he should have been studying. There
are no longer any Winskills in that area, and I know nothing further of that
branch.

found your website very interesting- as it is my mother's maiden name. I had no
idea that there were such a number of Winskills around the world. I will leave
my email address upon returning as I should check with my mother.
