The village of Winskill finds itself in Wikipedia in connection with its sister village Hunsonby, with a very short bit of history about the municipality. Here's the link:

Time for another post, if only to ward off the summer doldrums. And what better for said task than some winter pix? Last winter here in the US Pacific Northwest we had great snowfall in the mountain. We are only an hour or so from the slopes in Tacoma, itself at sea level on Puget Sound in turn. I'm a Nordic (cross-country)skier of a fanatic stripe, and like to ski in the mountains; we climb, yes, but we sail downhill! I got out 23 times last season, which will show you that I am indeed a fanatic. Anyway, here's a link to a pic of my daughter Christine, me, and another ski group member on a nice day this last winter:

Glyn, perhaps you can enable the link when you have a chance....Consider it done

I thought I would tell a small story related to me and Debbie by Archie Winskill when we visited him in 2002. I of course asked him about his service with the Queen's Flight. He amusedly referred to it as a "glitzy job". He was next in line for promotion to Air Vice Marshal when he was asked to take the job in 1968. He agreed, and was given among other things the definite impression that it was thought on high that with his force of personality he would provide a good balance to Prince Philip on Royal Family aviation matters. Philip of course is also known for a strong personality. Archie diplomatically referred to clashing with the Prince on more than one occasion, and related a particular story about Prince Charles. Archie had been among those who gave Charles his flight training. This included helicopter qualification. Charles had an opportunity to fly a chopper to an event that I won't enumerate, and Philip wanted him to pilot. Archie disagreed, on the ground that Charles wasn't quite ready, and he and passengers would be rather precious cargo. This led to quite a struggle, with Archie prevailing on his considerable authority over such aviation matters, and with other members of the Family being quite amused at the outcome of the "stuggle".

Hello Clive....Everything fits.....The first James Lockley Winskill was my Great Great Grandfathers brother making him my GG uncle...his offspring James Lockley was my First Cousin twice removed....your mum my second cousin once removed...which makes you Clive my third cousin. I didn't work all that out , the family tree software I have did it for me. I did not have your mum's name in my family tree because I have only got records of Births ,Marriges and Deaths for the UK. But now I have found a branch of the family I am eagar for more. You say you have more Info but need to dig it out. I would appreciate any info you can provide and fill in some of the gaps I have in my tree. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. could I suggest getting Skype and we can talk free Pc to Pc.

Hi Glyn. I'm doing all this from memory, I do have some stuff packed away somewhere. I confess the birth year might be wrong, try 1874. James Lockley W. died when my my mother was 16 (1930), he was 56 (heart attack). James Lockley was the son of another James Lockley Winskill (believe or not), born 1842 and Jane McMillan (born 1846). James the First was the son of Thomas Winskill (born 1804) and Elizabeth Lockley (hence the family name of Lockley). My mother's mother was Elizabeth Ann Dodd, born 1872, brought up in Hexham. This is about all I know. Would love to know more. Mum did see some relations in Cumbria when she did her big trip about 1990. All for now. Regards Clive.

Hello Clive.....I was excited to read your entry into my guestbook as I have a couple of occurances of the name James Lockley Winskill in my family tree, but the dates do not match your 1884. Could you supply me with further information ie. James Lockley winskill's parents names, his wifes name, possibly your mothers DOB, but as I know that may be confidential information, if you would prefere to email me with details rather than post them in the guestbook then please do. I await your response.
Clive Bray in Auckland at 18:15:07 Monday April 17 2006
Hi My name is Clive Bray. My mother was Edith Alice Lockley Winskill, born here in NZ from parents who came out from Newcastle Upon Tyne in the early 1900s. Her father was James Lockley Winskill, born 1884. I know there are other Winskills in the South Island but don't know if or how I am related. Came across this website by punching 'Winskill' in Google. Fascinating to find this. Regards Clive

Had a quick browse through your website. My family are 'Winskill's' and we live in Nottingham. My father was born near Durham but was brought up in Newcastle upon Tyne. He moved to Nottingham in the late 60's when he met my mother.

Thanks for the detailed post, June. Tell us more about your branch as you get the chance. Good to see Brian Sowerby's post. I corresponded with Brian some years ago when he was Secretary of the Queen's Flight Association, and he graciously gave me helpful information about Sir Archie, before I was actually able to go over and meet our distinguished clansman. Brian kindly emailed me this morning with a report of the service at St. Clement Danes, and is sending me a copy of the order of service. When I receive it, I'll post more, including some of Brian's remarks about the service. Thanks very much for posting here, Brian, and thanks for the honor that you and your distinguished compatriots have given to this great man.

Yesterday, Monday,20th March 2006, along with some two hundred fellow members of The Queen's Flight Association and other friends of his from the Royal Air Force, I attended the Memorial Service for the life of Air Commodore Sir Archie Winskill, KCVO, CBE, DFC* in St. Clement Danes Church, Strand, London, the Church of the Royal Air Force. A wonderful Memorial Service and a tribute to a man who was greatly admired and loved by those who served with and under him.

What a pleasant suprise, as I have a tapestry of my grans family tree (Winskill) dating back to 1802 and various other items, at last I have the time to go back even further to discover where my ancesters came from and discovered "The Winskill Clan",Notts my mother was also intrigued. My grandmother was Annie Mary Dalby nee Winskill, she had two sisters mum's Aunt Jane (Ginny) and mum's Aunt Elizabeth (Lizzy) there were also three more children who died in infancy. My gran Annie Mary Winskill married my grandfather Frederick William Dalby the sadler and they lived at Auckland Park and then Shildon, C.o. Durham. The Tapestry reads "Henry Winskill born 29th October 1802, Ann Dawson born June 7th 1812, married on 8th September 1931, Jane daughter of Henry and Ann Winskill Born May 20th 1832, Thomas Winskill Born January 19th 1834, John Winskill Born March 4th 1836, Ann Winskill Born March 23rd 1839, Sarah Winskill Born February 25th 1851. Far beyond the silver star. Travelling in the heavens afar, Is a home beyond our site, For the children of the light." I have looked Henry Winskill and Ann Dawson up on The Church of Latterday Saints web site and find that Henry came from Kirkby Thore in Cumbria. I hope this is of some use to someone in their search. However its so late so I'll have to close for now and wish everyone all the best.

Ed... I have a suspicion that the Sharon in Norfolk is my niece. I have not seen or heard from her for years, and she never leaves her e-mail address. I am also interested in her reference to the Winskill book and plead with Sharon to please get in touch AND LEAVE A CONTACT ADDRESS.

Good to see you post, Janet, and welcome. Glad you just found us; sounds like you've read through the Guestbook, if you haven't done the 2004 and pre-2004 material, you should, as that's where most of the great info is. I strongly encourage you, and Sharon, to post information about yourselves and your branches when you visit again. In addition, never hesitate to contact me or Glyn for information, etc.

Hello Janet and welcome to the site. You say there are a few Winskills in your area..could there be a possible link to a Peter T Winskill who was connected with the temperance movement in the 1800's, living in Warrington(see entries for 2004). There is a possibility that Peter Turner Winskill is one of my distant ancestors but I have not yet confirmed this.

This is to advise the clan that a memorial service for Sir Archie Winskill will be held at 12 noon on March 20, 2006 at St. Clement Danes, the RAF church in London, in the Strand. Wish I could be there; perhaps some Winskills can make it. It's open to the public.
